Management Project
Collaboration for a safer Future.
Objectives
Integrating scientific research with practical agricultural solutions, the AflaZ project aims to reduce aflatoxin contamination in maize and milk—two essential staple foods in Kenya that pose serious health risks due to fungal toxins. Funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL), AflaZ focuses on innovative prevention strategies, farmer education, and sustainable monitoring systems to improve food safety and long-term food security in high-risk regions.
Approach
A consortium of German research institutions (Max Rubner-Institut, Julius Kühn-Institut, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, Rheinland-Pfälzische Technische Universität) collaborates with Kenyan partners (Kenya Agricultural & Livestock Research Organization, Eastern Africa Farmers Federation) to implement cost-effective mitigation strategies. This includes developing antifungal plant-based solutions, optimizing farming and storage practices, and promoting knowledge transfer to empower local farmers in tackling aflatoxin contamination sustainably.
